People always ask us, how far ahead should we book a cake?
To be quite honest, I don't know the answer to that anymore.
For summer/fall months we take very limited celebration cakes due to the number of wedding cakes that we do so I would recommend booking them at least 3 months prior to the event date. For winter spring months I would recommend booking at least one month prior.
Note that these are simply recommendations. This doesn't mean that we wont be full before that, for instance, we have one August day in 2015 that has only one space left but are not fully booked for February of this year. Go figure.
To book your cake we take a 50% non refundable deposit for all orders except weddings, for weddings we take a 20% deposit to book but should be paid up to 50% three months prior to the event. If you contact us and we do have a space for your date please note that that same day we may talk to half a dozen other people about that same day. By the next day it could be full. Inquiring about a date does not secure your spot, deposit does.
I realize that most people don't know what they are wanting for design three months prior but as long as we discuss prices and you are comfortable with them we can book with a deposit. Design can be changed up to a week prior to the event.
We have recently added a quick order form to our website which has certain designs/flavors to choose from, these cakes can be ordered within days of the event but no changes will be made to the design. These are to be paid ahead of time online with paypal and have limited flavor options.
Weekday orders (other than Friday pickup) can sometimes be done with less notice but please note that if you book a cake for Thursday pickup it will be baked on Wednesday not same day so if you are needing it for Saturday it is already baked three days ago.
To book a cake there are a few options, email is the best way to get a hold of us. We do our best to answer all emails within the same day, sometimes within an hour of sending it. Later in the week we only answer emails in the evening after business hours. To pay deposits we also offer many options, paypal, email money transfer, phone in credit card or coming into our store. Just note that on days we are closed paypal and email payments will be booked and therefore will have priority to those entered in on the next business day.
I hope this blog post answers a few questions about our company's booking process. Please contact us
Its just flour, sugar , eggs and oil
If it was ever just about the ingredients no one would ever need to
order a custom cake. Custom cakes are edible works of art. When you buy a
custom cake you are paying for much more than just the ingredients which when
cakes are made from scratch like ours are can cost more than you may think.
But its just a cake.
Its not 'just a cake' to us. Its truly a labour of love.
Wages: Even if I paid my staff minimum wage and it took them 5
hours to make your cake from start to finish, that's over $50.00 without even calculating cost of supplies and overhead. Basically on a 100.00 cake we may break even.
Overhead: Licensed Cake decorators don't have much of a choice
when it comes to overhead costs. Unless you have a separate health inspected kitchen in your home (meaning other than the one you cook for your family in),
you cannot recieve a license to sell food made in your home. So here is where rent comes into play. Even when we were renting a kitchen, we were paying 80.00 per day to use it. In one day we would have to make a min. 2 cakes just to pay for it.
Time:Many of our cakes (including baking time) can take anywhere
from 3-25 hours to make. This doesn't even include the time for delivery,
shopping for ingredients, clean up, consultations or even the time to answer
the back and forth emails. One fondant character or flower can take 2 hours at
least to make so if I was making/paying min. Wage + supplies you would be
looking at min. 30.00 to make one of them.
So how much should I expect to pay for
one of your pieces of edible art?
Expect to pay a minimum of 50.00 for any order or anywhere from 3.00 to 8.00 per serving.
